Reception May 3, 3:00- 4:30
This exhibition showcases projects made by students enrolled in ART 441 – Advanced Photography in the spring semester of 2018. The course is offered annually by the Photography, Video and Imaging Division of the University of Arizona School of Art and functions as both a critique seminar and a professional development workshop. Students pursue independent projects with the intent of realizing a body of work that demonstrates conceptual engagement, thematic unity, and technical proficiency. Operating with a common footing in rigorous engagement, the work is as varied as the individuals who created it. Genre approaches encompass documentary, directorial, performative and formalist, while conceptual underpinnings range from identity politics to the sciences. What unifies the output is earnest engagement, with each work representing a vision that has been won through an iterative process. A process in which students are expected to evaluate both themselves and their peers. The pages that follow are evidence of what they have accomplished during the semester and the beginnings of what we can expect from them in the future.
