Professor Karen Zimmermann, Illustration + Design, is Central Print’s 2018 Artist in Residence! During her residency, Karen will be working at Central Print and The Firecracker Press on a series of typographic studies using words and imagery that she will discover in the Old North Neighborhood. Through conversations, Karen will create a series of broadsides exploring the sense of place and how it is represented.
Karen will also be leading a community workshop. During the workshop Karen will lead a collaborative printmaking activity exploring the sense of place and how it is represented through text, type, and imagery. Inspired by the distinctive Old North St. Louis neighborhood we will explore how graphic design can be empowering for communities. Conversations will be printed on broadsides using different typefaces to capture individual qualities of voice. The collaborative broadside posters will be displayed throughout the neighborhood. Participants will also print these conversations on postcards to mail, taking a dialog started within the community and extending it beyond geographic borders.
