About The School

At the School of Art you have the unique opportunity to be surrounded by and to engage with faculty and peers of cross-disciplinary expertise. All studio and scholarly divisions – 2D Studies, 3D & Extended Media, Photography | Video | Imaging, Illustration, Design, and Animation, Art History, and Art & Visual Culture Education – are essential to the whole of the School, adding particular elements that serve to invigorate our mission, reputation, and spirit as we move forward into an exciting and promising future.

MISSION STATEMENT

The School of Art is devoted to promoting the transformational power of art in all aspects of life.

VISION STATEMENT

The School of Art is committed to preparing students for careers in Studio Art, Art History, and Art and Visual Culture Education in an increasingly diverse and technological world. The School of Art provides distinguished undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral instruction that emphasizes critical thinking in all aspects of learning. We excel in creative and scholarly research while striving to expand and diversify our curricular and program offerings.

In addition to maintaining an array of high quality academic programs, the School of Art works to engage the broader community on and off campus through a range of programs, including:

  • A variety of general education and First Year Experience (FYE) courses open to non-art majors
  • Robust co-curricular programming through our gallery program and Visiting Artists and Scholars Endowment Lecture Series
  • A series of annual events and other outreach endeavors coordinated by the School of Art Advisory Board

Ph.D. student Sedona Heidinger was among six presenters at today's "Collective" Art History Symposium at the University of Arizona Museum of Art. Other speakers were Barbie Kim, Bentley Brown, Shen Qu, Gabriel Quick and Dr. Gregory Sholette (keynote). Director Colin Blakely opened the event, which also included a Collective exhibition at the Palo Verde Gallery (Grad Studios). Go to tinyurl.com/2p9eeshm for more details. Art History Prof. Sarah Moore is a board member of the Institute for the Study of International Expositions (ISIE), which is holding its second annual online symposium March 23-24.

Moore will chair one of the sessions at the event, which features academic papers and top designers involved in exposition design. ISIE is the brainchild of UA Architectural History Prof. Lisa Schrenk.
