Altered Surface: The Skin of Things
Dec. 13, 2019 – Jan. 2, 2020
Opening: Friday, Dec. 13, 3 – 4:30pm
This exhibition considers the work of eleven artists who are investigating what it means to alter, appropriate, generate or de-face images through the production of photo sculpture, still, and moving imagery.
Through their semester-long examination of art historical movements and precedents, strategies of presentation, and experimental artistic production, the artists included in The Skin of Things assert the manifold uses of lens-based imagery while addressing a wide range of aesthetic and conceptual interests. The artists included in this exhibition describe a spectrum of personal, perceptual, ecological, social, political, and art historical concerns while their work asks us to re-think the potential for photography to suggest latent meaning that lies beyond the skin of these altered surfaces.
