Chroma Complex, a compilation of paintings by Kenzie Wells, embodies the visually deceptive qualities of color within two-dimensional spaces. Various colorful planes are paired with reflective surfaces, producing images that continuously shift and merge as the viewer moves through the gallery. Through painted walls, shadows, and reflections the work addresses the space beyond its edges, highlighting its physical presence. By synchronizing movement and perspective, the show emphasizes the experiential and ephemeral nature of color within our surroundings.
Originally from Tennessee, Kenzie Wells received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2015 with a concentration in painting from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Always extremely observational and fascinated by art, her dad taught her how to oil paint at the age of eight and she has been making work since. Wells is currently pursuing her MFA in 2D at the University of Arizona and works across an array of mediums, including installation, sculpture, photography, and painting.
