Clare Benson | Artist Talk: Oct 27, 7pm, rm 312
In her multimedia exhibition, Until There Is No Sun, artist, Clare Benson, explores the connections and contradictions between light and seeing, science and mythology. The artist’s recent tenure above the Arctic Circle serves as the epicenter of her investigation into the complexities of the human condition—what it means for the earth to be the perfect distance from the sun; what it means to be alive and searching for meaning.
Benson’s photographs, video, and writings document the oscillating landscape of a place in the far north of Scandinavia, where weather and time carve out an environment like no other. Her research, working alongside scientists, space physicists, and indigenous reindeer herders, presents a hauntingly quiet terrain that is absent from the sun’s light for months at a time. The work reflects the immeasurable affect that this changing light has on all of nature.
Clare Benson is an alumnus of the School of Art, University of Arizona. Her work has been exhibited and screened throughout the US and internationally including Texas Woman’s University, Texas; University Library, Bratislava, Slovakia; and The Dream Factory, Frankfurt, Germany. She currently holds a position as Visiting Artist (Faculty) at Arizona State University, as well as Honorary Research Assistant in the Department of Ophthalmology at University College London.
