Theory and Practice of Third Space is a collaborative exhibition by the Sienna Collective for students of color in the arts. It consists of the framework to a nomadic structure with videos and photographs that provide momentary glimpses into spaces of hybridity. This installation intimates a third space and, in doing so, suggests a spatial politics of inclusion rather than exclusion that initiates new signs of identity, and innovative sites of collaboration and contestation.
The third space is a space that engenders new possibilities. It is an interruptive, interrogative, and enunciative space of new forms of cultural meaning and production blurring the limitations of existing boundaries and calling into question established categorizations of culture and identity. The concept of the third space is critical for developing alternative methods of transgression and subversion to colonial binary thinking and oppositional positioning.
