A traveling art exhibition featuring two University of Arizona School of Art graduate students will “bear witness to changing landscapes/waterways and family/community” of the Southwest.

“Land, Body & Archive” is an exhibition by University of Arizona MFA candidates Nathan Cordova and Jacqueline Arias and 11 other MFA students from the University of New Mexico and Arizona State University. The show opens on Oct. 26, with a public reception on Nov. 3, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The exhibition was held in Albuquerque in September and is slated for Tempe in early 2024. The 13 artists are part of the Southwest Photo Collaborative, made up of Arizona, New Mexico and ASU students.

“The works selected eviscerate the boundaries between how our individual photography practices examine relationships to Land, Body and Archive,” students Cordova, Emma Ressel and li rothrock write. “The artists employ storytelling, collage and the re-contextualization of imagery to challenge dominant narratives, borders, histories and ourselves.

In addition, “This conjunctive presentation connects the nodes of our experiences across the American Southwest to underscore our collective concerns and create an experience to encounter photography, each other and the world anew,” the three write.

Art History PhD student Marina Perez (UNM) writes, “Through Land, Body and Archive we bear witness to changing landscapes/waterways and family/community memory, and the embodiment of ritual. At stake is the negotiation of identity, positionality, and relationships with human and non-human relatives.”

Participating artists are Arias, Cordova, Zoë Gleitsman, claudia hermano, Mehrdad Mirzaie, Richard Pence, Elizabeth Piñeda, Ressel, Francis Reynolds, rothrock, Anna Rotty, Brianna Tadeo and Nicholas Valdés.

Lionel Rombach Gallery is open Monday through Friday,  10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please email Cordova at nathancordova@arizona.edu or follow @swphotocollab on Instagram.
